September Virginia Beach

What to do? What to do? Where to start? If you’re anything like me, the idea of planting your fall annual color is already on your mind. Of course, you’ll wait until the end of the month to plant those violas and pansies, but it doesn’t hurt to see if there are any new varieties out there.

Are you a veggie gardener? It’s time to sow those seeds for your cool water crops. Lettuce, arugula, spinach, and radishes…it’s their time!

Freshen up your mulch. There’s still a lot of beautiful weather before any real cold (stay inside) temps appear so there’s no reason to let some weathered mulch ruin the look of those pansies and other cold weather annuals you’ve planted.

How did your hydrangea plants do over the summer? Did it seem that some of them suffered from too much sun? Time to transplant them to a coolier, shadier location.

As the leaves begin to fall, don’t rake them. Mow over them, collect them in your catcher bag and add them to your compost pile or use them as mulch in your garden bed. You can wait to rake until later in the season.

September is the perfect time to divide your daylilies and irises. More plants, healthier plants!
