It seems as though everyone wants to cutback on the yard maintenance these days. There are several ways to make sure you spend less time on maintenance and more time on enjoyment.

Outdoor Living Spaces

Creating more living spaces in your yard, whether a deck or patio, will reduce the amount of lawn space and take away from your lawn and plant maintenance.

Xeriscaping

Continuing with the patio theme and removing the green spaces brings up another option, which is xeriscaping. With a xeriscape, not only do you take away the green space, but you also create an area that specifically considers watering requirements. With a well planned xeriscape, watering is minimal and is definitely the goal of a xeriscape plan.

Plant dwarf varieties of foundation plants

When planning your landscape design, spend some time researching the growth patterns of your foundation plants.  We’ll share a few of our favorites, along with their specs.

Littleleaf Boxwood grows 2′ to 4′ tall and has a 4′ to 5′ spread.

Lemon-Lime Nandina grows between 3′ to 4′ tall and has a proportionate spread.

Shi Shi Gashira Sasanqua Camellias make excellent landscape or container plants and are much more tolerant of sun and soil conditions than the larger flowered Japonica Camellias and reach heights of 4′ to 5′.

There are quite a few ways to cut back on the maintenance and we will continue to address these in future posts.
